Marco Island
The largest of Florida’s Ten Thousand Islands – and the only one that’s developed – Marco Island is one of the most breathtaking getaways in the country. It was ranked among the “Best Islands in the U.S.” in Condé Nast Traveler’s 2020 and 2021 Readers’ Choice Awards, and its resorts have raked in accolades as well.
Surrounded by the unspoiled beauty of the Everglades, this barrier island lies just a few minutes south of Naples and has a total area of 24.6 square miles, around half of which is water. It’s famous, among other things, for its crescent-shaped swath of beach, which extends for six miles and is also extraordinarily wide. You’ll find that there’s always plenty of room on Marco Island’s beaches. The island also features more than 100 miles of waterways, making it ideal for boating enthusiasts.
Marco Island was developed with leisure living in mind right from the outset. Among the many resorts here are the Hilton Marco Island Beach Resort & Spa and the JW Marriott Marco Island Beach Resort. There’s plenty to see and do on and off the island as well, including shelling, fishing, camping, golf, and dining on freshly caught seafood.
Hop on a kayak and explore the mangrove forests of the Ten Thousand Islands National Wildlife Refuge. Go on an eco-tour and spot bottlenose dolphins. Tee off at JW Marriott’s The Rookery or Hammock Bay. You can enjoy all of these and more in Marco Island.
Unsurprisingly, many who come here for a visit eventually decide to stay, and Marco Island also has plenty to offer when it comes to real estate. Buyers can choose from townhouse-style condos to waterfront units to one-of-a-kind estates with enough water frontage to dock a yacht or two. Lots are also still available.
